‘Someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us’ — Sappho
Sappho was a Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. She is famous for her lesbian-lyric poetry. But perhaps she is not as famous as she deserves to be.
In a post (dated February 25th) @tshirt_philosophique writes:
‘In the spirit of giving more space to women who have marked the world with ideas, I created this t-shirt that pays homage to Sappho. This great Greek poet is recognized as the first famous woman because of her writing. In addition, several of her poems are known for their declaration of love for other women, which makes this historical figure doubly interesting. Not surprisingly, some would say, her poems were condemned and destroyed by the theologians of early Christianity, so much so that today we have practically only preserved fragments of her work. But no offense to her detractors, Sappho was quite right when she said: "Yes, someone will remember us later" (Fragment 147).’
@tshirt_philosophique will donate C$5 to the Société Féminismes et Philosophies de l’Université de Montréal for every purchase of the t-shirt.
